Well-known tennis coach and former player Mark Petchey has shared insights into Andy Murray’s mindset and what he can contribute to Novak Djokovic’s team. Djokovic announced Murray as his new coach in one of the most surprising developments of the 2024 season.

Petchey, who coached Murray during the early years of his career, said that the two-time Olympic gold medalist will not travel to Australia just to fill a spot. He highlighted Murray’s competitive nature, recalling how he hated losing even in console games. Petchey believes Murray will bring that same intensity and determination to his role as Djokovic’s coach.

Djokovic has been without a coach since March 2024 when he parted ways with former Croatian player Goran Ivanisevic. Ivanisevic has since become the coach of Elena Rybakina.

Murray retired from professional tennis at the Paris Olympics. The three-time Grand Slam champion concluded his career by competing in men’s doubles with Dan Evans in his farewell tournament.

Novak Djokovic has announced that he will compete in the Brisbane International, starting on December 29. However, his newly-appointed coach, Andy Murray, will not attend the event. Murray, who recently retired from professional tennis, joined the Serb’s team a few weeks ago.

The partnership between Djokovic and Murray has drawn a lot of attention. Murray is expected to coach Djokovic through the Australian Open, which begins on January 12. Brisbane is one of the key preparation events before the Australian Open. The 37-year-old Djokovic will aim to win his 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

In September, Djokovic mentioned he is no longer focused on specific tournaments or his ATP ranking. He said he has no long-term plans and is choosing to live in the moment. This year, he won just one title—a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. It is the first time since 2005 that Djokovic has not won an ATP title and only the fourth time since 2008 that he missed out on a Grand Slam.

The Brisbane International will take place from December 29 to January 5, 2025. Djokovic will use it as a warm-up for the Australian Open, where he will hope to achieve another milestone with Murray’s guidance.
