Zach Wilson’s first four seasons in the NFL haven’t exactly gone according to plan. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft spent the first three years struggling with the New York Jets before he was jettisoned in a trade for peanuts during the 2024 offseason.

Now set to play for the Miami Dolphins — his third team in as many seasons — Wilson hasn’t given up hope that he can get his career on track.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a journeyman, but I still believe I can be a starter in this league whenever that opportunity comes,” Wilson told reporters Monday. “So I’m just trying to put myself in the best situation with the best team and coaches and do the absolute best that I can and hopefully at some point, you can get that opportunity to show what you could do.”

A starting role isn’t up for grabs in Miami. The Dolphins committed $212 million to Tua Tagovailoa and Wilson will unquestionably be No. 2 on the depth chart. But Tagovailoa has played all 17 games in just one of his five seasons in the NFL and the Dolphins were forced to turn to a backup to start in six games during the 2024 season.

Wilson, 25, didn’t see the field at all during his one-year stint with the Denver Broncos in 2024. His only NFL action came in New York where he posted a 12-21 record as a starter with 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

“I feel like Denver was a good opportunity for me to kind of lay the stresses of being an NFL quarterback and just trying to be perfect every day,” Wilson said.

Now in Miami, Wilson is hoping he can take a step forward under the tutelage of head coach Mike McDaniel.

“It starts from Coach McDaniel and goes all the way down. I’d just say the offensive staff as a whole has done a great job,” Wilson said. “You’ve seen how Tua (Tagovailoa)’s development has gone, too, since he’s been there, and I think I’m just excited to be with those guys.”
