The San Francisco 49ers Will Trade Deebo Samuel to the Minnesota Vikings

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2024 NFL season right around the corner, it’s time to start looking at players that could be moved at the trade deadline. A player in mind that becomes an interesting option is San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, Deebo Samuel, if he is traded, it will be to the Minnesota Vikings.

Sam Darnold is proving he was never the issue on the New York Jets with his recent upswing in production on the Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers. In Minnesota with the starting job he will fully show that and have the Vikings in playoff contention still despite the injury to JJ McCarthy. The one factor that could hold them back is their receiving room.

I know, right, a bit confusing to say when they’re led by Justin Jefferson. Yet, Jefferson can’t carry the load of the room, as defenses know he’s the star and need to limit him. That, and with Jordan Addison suffering a minor injury in training camp, the Vikings should do what they can to truly boost the room and make sure an injury doesn’t hold them back. With Darnold having the playmakers around him is ideal, and one of them is who he knows from San Francisco in Samuel.

With Brock Purdy, Brandon Aiyuk, and Trent Williams all in line for either a new contract or extension, it makes things cap space wise a bit difficult for the 49ers. Not to mention, with the contract of Christian McCaffrey, it’s certain they’ll have to lose a player to make this all work. With Aiyuk being a bit younger at 26, and the clear top option for Purdy, it would be ideal to give Aiyuk his contract extension. With Samuel at 28 he is older than Aiyuk but still a valuable player that would allow the 49ers to get plenty of value in trade return, especially with his versatility out of the backfield.

Trading Samuel would free up $22 million in cap space, which would allow San Francisco some flexibility. For the Vikings they’d be getting Samuel who is coming off a 1,038-yard, seven touchdown season who brings a dynamic style to the offense. With his elusiveness and physicality to create yards after the catch it’s extremely ideal, and would create a nightmare receiving trio with him, Jefferson, and Addison.
