Detroit Lions Face Playoff Heartbreak and Turn to the 2025 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions had a phenomenal regular season, but their Super Bowl dreams were shattered in shocking fashion. After securing a first-round bye, they suffered a stunning playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, leaving fans and analysts alike in disbelief.

Now, with free agency settling down, all eyes turn to the 2025 NFL Draft as the Lions look to retool and strengthen their already impressive roster. A new mock draft from A to Z Sports suggests Detroit could add another explosive weapon to their offense.

Are the Lions Preparing to Replace One of Their Star Players?

In the latest A to Z Sports mock draft, the Lions are projected to select Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden, a dynamic playmaker who could bring another level of explosiveness to Detroit’s passing attack.

“The Lions have one of the better top-to-bottom rosters in the league. But there is a pretty big hole in their WR corps, and Luther Burden could fill that need.”

With Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams already in place, the Lions have a promising receiving duo. However, finding a third impact player could elevate the offense to new heights. Burden, at one point viewed as the top WR prospect in the 2025 class, has elite potential despite a slight dip in production during his final college season.

Luther Burden’s Potential Impact on the Lions

Burden showcased his immense talent in 2023, amassing 1,212 receiving yards, nine touchdowns, and 86 receptions—all career highs. However, his 2024 numbers dipped to 676 yards, six touchdowns, and 61 catches, leading some scouts to question his development.

Despite this, Burden remains one of the most explosive playmakers available. His speed, route-running, and ability to create separation make him a dangerous weapon in any offense. If he lands in Detroit, he could give quarterback Jared Goff another game-changing target.

Is Burden the Right Fit for Detroit?

While Burden is undeniably talented, questions remain about his fit within the Lions’ current receiving corps. His skill set is somewhat similar to what the team already has in St. Brown and Williams, who thrive on quick routes and deep speed.

Some analysts believe the Lions should pursue a bigger-bodied receiver who excels in contested catches and red-zone situations. A prospect like Arizona’s Tetatoria McMillan, who brings size and physicality, could be a better complement to Detroit’s existing playmakers.

If the Lions want McMillan, they may need to trade up to secure him. However, Detroit has shown in past drafts that they are willing to make bold moves for players they truly believe in.

What’s Next for the Lions?

With the draft approaching, the Lions will have to decide whether Burden is the missing piece or if they should target a different type of receiver. One thing is certain: after their playoff disappointment, Detroit is determined to build a roster that can not only reach the postseason but make a deep run in 2025.

Will Luther Burden be part of that journey? The answer will come on draft night.
