Vikings linked to $118 million Pro Bowler in J.J. McCarthy insurance move

Unless the Minnesota Vikings have a change of heart over the next few weeks to months, the expectation is for J.J. McCarthy to have a chance to win the job during training camp.

All bets are off if the Vikings found somebody they like more, but the front office has said all the right things regarding McCarthy and his future with the organization.

That’s a positive sign for Minnesota, as its rookie needs to get a chance to play and prove whether he’s good enough to lead a team to a playoff spot.

However, the Vikings are also expected to sign a veteran backup before the offseason is over. There are still many on the market, but options could be dwindling in the near future, as guys want to find jobs.

Dane Mizutani of Twin Cities examined a few options for the Vikings to consider, including former Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

“After taking time away from the sport last season, Tannehill might be ready to return to action. If he’s indeed interested in making a comeback, the Vikings seem like a good fit for the 36-year-old…

“Now that Tannehill is at a different chapter in his career, he might relish the opportunity to help McCarthy reach his full potential,” Mizutani wrote.

Tannehill was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. He had a decent career in Miami and played well in Tennessee, too.

However, he’s also dealt with a few injuries throughout his career, meaning he’s better suited for a backup role at this stage.

Ideally, the Vikings would only need him if McCarthy were to get injured, and he’s proven he could fit that role.

For a cheap price, the Texas native could be an intriguing option.
