Serving as Philadelphia’s catalyst, Edmundo Sosa came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base, facing Colorado Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik. In his third consecutive start at shortstop, filling in for Trea Turner, Sosa delivered a crucial hit that jumpstarted a late-game scoring surge.

Lining a double into right-center field, Sosa drove in two runs, giving the Phillies the lead in what became a 6-1 victory. As he reached second base, he turned toward the dugout, pumped his arms, and flexed his muscles—once again proving his value.

“It’s important for me to get these opportunities early on,” Sosa said through a team interpreter. “I’m just having fun on the field, staying optimistic, and doing whatever the team needs from me.”

Sosa continued his strong start to the 2025 season, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. He has recorded two hits in each of the three games he has played, going 6-for-11 with a walk and three doubles. It’s a role he has embraced since arriving in Philadelphia.

Manager Rob Thomson emphasized Sosa’s value, noting his ability to fill in across the infield when injuries arise. “He’s extremely important because he can step in and play well when given the chance,” Thomson said.

While Sosa may not be an everyday starter, he thrives in his role. His aggressive approach at the plate can sometimes lead to struggles with extended at-bats, but he has carved out a niche as a reliable utility player. He contributed off the bench during the Phillies’ 2022 World Series run after being acquired from the Cardinals and continues to provide crucial depth.

Sosa acknowledges his role but remains prepared every day, valuing the trust the Phillies have placed in him. “The Phillies brought me in when I was going through a rough stretch with my previous team. From day one, they treated me like a superstar, and that’s helped me embrace my role and give my best effort,” he said.

On Monday, with the Phillies trailing by a run in the seventh and two outs on the board, Sosa came through. His 103 mph line drive plated two runs, setting off a rally. Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run homer, while Max Kepler and Nick Castellanos added back-to-back home runs in the eighth to seal the win.

Schwarber praised Sosa’s performance, especially in Turner’s absence. “With Trea out, it’s not ideal, but having a guy who can step in and perform like this is huge,” he said.

Sosa’s playing time may soon decrease with Turner’s return on the horizon—Turner even pinch-hit and scored during the seventh-inning rally. Still, the Phillies believe Sosa will remain ready whenever he’s called upon.

“He’s an incredible player and person,” Schwarber added. “He approaches the game the right way. He’s a special talent.”
