The Phillies (9-6) continue to struggle offensively, getting shut out for the second time in three games as they dropped the series finale to the Cardinals (7-8) in St. Louis, 7-0. It marks the first time since August 2022 that they’ve been held scoreless twice in the same series.
Despite some early chances against Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore, the Phillies couldn’t convert. Bryce Harper nearly put one out in the first inning with a 105.3 mph drive to deep left-center, but the wind kept it in the park. In the second, they had runners on second and third with one out, but Brandon Marsh struck out and Johan Rojas was thrown out trying to bunt. Their last hit came in the third inning—Cardinals pitchers then retired 20 straight batters to finish the game.
Marsh has especially been in a slump, going hitless in his last 26 at-bats since the Nationals series.
Zack Wheeler gave up a two-run homer in the fourth and two ground-rule doubles in the sixth that brought in two more runs. He pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Matt Strahm and Carlos Hernandez combined to surrender three additional runs out of the bullpen.
The Phillies now head back to Philadelphia after a tough 2-4 road trip. They’ll begin a four-game set against the San Francisco Giants on Monday, with Taijuan Walker set to face right-hander Landen Roupp.
