The three-time Nascar Cup Series race winner also clinched the Nascar Xfinity Series title in 2003.

In all, Vickers competed in 323 Cup Series races from 2003 to 2016.

His Nascar career ended early at the age of 32 following issues with recurring blood clots.

But he bowed out with an impressive record of three victories, 12 pole positions and 78 finishes in the top 10.

The iconic driver, from North Carolina, disappeared off social media five years ago.

He didn’t explain why, but some fans had begun replying to posts with negative comments about his wife.

Now, though, Vickers has shared a screenshot of a statement written on his iPhone’s Notes App.

Apart from announcing his relationship split, he gave an insight into his feelings about the situation.

Vickers also chose the occasion to say he would no longer remain “under a rock” on social media.

And above his post, Vickers added a picture of a digital sign that read: “Delete that old version of me in your head, it expired.”

Vickers’ statement said: “Hey friends. After ten years of marriage and five years under a rock on social media I’m coming out of digital hiding to share some heavy news: Sarah and I are getting divorced.

“I’m grateful for the time we shared – both the joyous moments and the difficult ones.

“I’m grateful for the learning. I’m grateful for the growth.

“Now that the dust has settled, I’m more grateful than ever for the clarity.”

However, his post then changed from reflective on a personal level to upbeat.

He wrote: “Here’s the good news: You can expect a bit more action out of me in the coming months.

“I’m back on my digital game and ready to keep y’all in the loop again,” Vickers said. “(Keep an eye out for some new creative moves, too.)”
