MATTHEW GOLDEN has made a commitment to utilize his NFL signing bonus to reclaim his grandmother’s former residence. The Texas wide receiver was chosen as the 23rd overall pick by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Draft, marking the first time since 2002 that the Packers have picked a wide receiver in the first round.
At 21, Golden has secured a $4.4 million contract with Green Bay following an outstanding season with the Longhorns. He intends to capitalize on his newfound celebrity status and substantial finances to acquire a property in Houston that previously belonged to his grandmother. When asked by On3 about his plans for his signing bonus, he shared, “I definitely want to get my grandma a house, man.
We lost our home a few years back. It’s where I spent my childhood, and it would be a true blessing to restore it for my family. I always vowed to do this, and now I have the means to fulfill that promise. If it’s meant to be, I’ll make it happen.” The house, currently on the market, holds cherished memories for Golden and his family through the years.
He further mentioned, “I visit it every chance I get. Just last week, I held a camp for kids back home. I drive down that street, the place of my upbringing.” Golden had an exceptional final year, securing 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. “It’s incredible.
This journey has been long,” Golden’s grandmother shared with the NFL Network on Thursday. “From his early years, we’ve faced challenges, but we held onto our faith and prayed, knowing he was destined for greatness from birth. Yet, this outcome is beyond anything we could have anticipated. It’s truly extraordinary.”
