The Dallas Cowboys have bolstered their running back lineup during the recent NFL Draft by picking two players on Day 3: Texas’ Jaydon Blue and Clemson’s Phil Mafah. This addition brings youthful talent with distinct skillsets to a position that has been lacking.
According to Blue’s head coach, Steve Sarkisian, the Cowboys can capitalize on his explosive talents in multiple ways. “Jaydon was a pivotal part of our offense, making numerous big plays,” Sarkisian remarked. “He’s an incredibly dynamic athlete, a versatile back. Not only can he effectively carry the ball as a traditional running back, but we also leveraged his receiving skills to get him the ball from the backfield.
He adds significant value to the return game as well. Jaydon is a dedicated player who loves football and will be a fantastic teammate. The Cowboys are acquiring a highly versatile player who will greatly benefit their franchise.” During his time in Austin, Blue challenged defenses with various strategies, accumulating over 1,600 scrimmage yards and 18 touchdowns across three seasons.
His major contributions, however, emerged later in his second year due to an injury that limited his earlier opportunities. Once he seized his moment, Blue surged forward, amassing 961 rushing yards, 496 receiving yards, and scoring 17 of his 18 touchdowns in his last 20 games.
This is the kind of output the Cowboys desperately need, given their struggles at the position over the previous two seasons. Even if he doesn’t immediately become a primary running back, he could serve as an asset in the return game or other receiving roles on the field. Ultimately, the Cowboys have secured a dynamic playmaker that Dak Prescott can utilize right away.
