In a historic moment for baseball fans and film lovers alike, Netflix has officially announced the release of its much-anticipated sports documentary, “The Underdog”—a” powerful and emotional tribute to Atlanta Braves icon Hank Aaron, one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history.

Set to premiere globally on July 17, 2025, the documentary dives deep into the life, legacy, and relentless spirit of Aaron, the legendary slugger who notched 3,600 career hits for the Braves and broke racial barriers en route to becoming a true American hero.

Directed by Emmy Award-winner Ava DuVernay and produced in partnership with MLB and the Aaron family, “The Underdog” chronicles Aaron’s rise from humble beginnings in Mobile, Alabama, to becoming baseball’s all-time home run king and one of the most respected figures in sports history.

“This isn’t just about baseball,” DuVernay said in a statement. “This is a story about courage, integrity, and quiet greatness. Hank Aaron wasn’t flashy — he was unshakable. And that made him unstoppable.”

The documentary will feature never-before-seen footage, personal interviews with Aaron’s family, former teammates, and baseball greats such as Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, and Dusty Baker. It also explores the intense racism Aaron endured as he chased Babe Ruth’s record and how he handled it all with class, determination, and humility.

Netflix’s official teaser describes the film as:
“A celebration of a man who redefined greatness — not just with a bat, but with unwavering grace.”

Hank Aaron, who passed away in 2021, played 23 seasons in the big leagues—21 of them with the Braves—and remains one of the most prolific hitters in the game’s history. He finished his career with 755 home runs, but it was his consistency, work ethic, and poise under pressure that made him beloved far beyond the diamond.

The Braves organization released a statement praising the film and encouraging fans to watch:

“Hank Aaron’s story deserves to be told on the biggest stage. The Underdog will give fans a powerful look at the man behind the numbers — a trailblazer who changed the game and inspired generations.”

With “The Underdog” set to premiere during MLB’s Hall of Fame induction weekend, fans across the globe are already marking their calendars. Early buzz suggests the film could be a major contender in next year’s documentary awards circuit.
