Green Bay, WI — The journey from the Lone Star State to Lambeau Field has been anything but ordinary for Green Bay Packers rookies Matthew Golden and Barryn Sorrell. Hailing from different programs in Texas, the two young prospects now find themselves donning the iconic green and gold after a whirlwind NFL Draft experience they both describe as “crazy.”
“It Still Doesn’t Feel Real”
Matthew Golden, a standout wide receiver from the University of Houston, was selected in the fourth round by the Packers. Known for his explosiveness and route-running precision, Golden said he was working out at his family’s home when the call came in.
“I had my phone on Do Not Disturb because I didn’t want any distractions,” Golden laughed. “Then suddenly my mom runs in yelling, ‘Green Bay’s on the phone!’ I picked up, and it was Coach LaFleur. That’s when everything started spinning.”
Golden, who grew up watching players like Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson, called the moment “a dream come true.”
A Defensive Surprise
For Barryn Sorrell, a defensive end from the University of Texas, the draft was filled with uncertainty. “I had spoken to a few teams, but Green Bay wasn’t one I had on my radar,” Sorrell said. “So when my agent told me to be ready for a surprise on Day 3, I didn’t expect it to be this kind of surprise.”
Sorrell was selected late in the sixth round, and although it came later than he’d hoped, he sees it as the perfect opportunity. “Green Bay has a history of developing defensive players. I’m here to work. I’m here to earn it.”
Bonded by Texas Roots
Despite coming from rival colleges, Golden and Sorrell found an immediate connection through their shared Texas background. “We met at rookie orientation and started talking about the heat, Whataburger, and Friday night lights,” Golden said. “Texas boys, you know? We bond fast.”
Now navigating the frigid northern climate and the pressure of performing in one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, the duo is leaning on each other for support.
Looking Ahead
As training camp looms, both rookies understand the work is just beginning. Golden hopes to earn a role in the receiving corps and special teams, while Sorrell is eyeing reps in the pass rush rotation.
“It’s not about where you start, it’s about how you finish,” Sorrell said. “We’re here to prove we belong.”
From the heart of Texas to the heart of Packers Nation, Matthew Golden and Barryn Sorrell are ready to write the next chapter of their football story—one play at a time.
