Aaron Rodgers has been connected to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. He even took a visit to the team’s facility and had a throwing session with DK Metcalf. However, no deal is in place. Rodgers noted on the “Pat McAfee Show” that he has not officially decided to play or not, as he is dealing with undisclosed things in his personal life.
As of right now, it seems like it’s the Steelers or nobody for Rodgers. However, as his free agency drags on, situations around the league could change. There is currently no timeline for Rodgers to sign. Bleacher Report’s Mitch Milani noted that the Steelers are by far the likeliest landing spot for Rodgers, but he also noted that Purdy’s injury history and contract situation could make the 49ers a surprise landing spot.
“The reason I bring this up is because Brock Purdy’s been injured quite a bit,” Milani said of Rodgers signing in San Francisco. “He got injured in the NFC Championship Game a couple of years back. That was a serious injury. He got injured last year. He is a smaller quarterback, and this is a team that, yes, brought in Mac Jones, but I don’t know if anyone is thinking the 49ers are a contender, a playoff team or some sort of NFC Threat with Mac Jones. I think Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch give Aaron Rodgers a call.”
Purdy has already dealt with elbow and shoulder injuries in his young career. Rodgers is not going to sign to become a backup, so his landing with the 49ers would have to come after an injury to Purdy before the season. However, Purdy’s history with injuries is concerning and does not take this outside the realm of possibility. Rodgers would not need much time to get up to speed and play if he were signed on short notice.

“He already knows the basics, at the very least, of the offense, having played under Matt LaFleur, who, of course, is from the Kyle Shanahan tree,” said Milani. “I think Rodgers, in a perfect world, is the ideal Kyle Shanahan quarterback in terms of intelligence, reading the field, accuracy, quick release and a little bit of moving to get outside and run play action.”
Milani went on to talk about Purdy’s contract being the other factor that could bring Rodgers into play. He stated that if there was a holdout situation with Purdy, the 49ers could consider Rodgers. The 49ers and Purdy are working to agree on an extension, but should things go sideways, Rodgers could be in play.
There is already no telling how late into the offseason it will take for Rodgers to sign. If the 49ers become an option, he could decide to join his childhood team over the Steelers.
