The stars are shining a little brighter in Dallas tonight. NFL all-time leading rusher and Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith is officially returning to the franchise — this time as an assistant coach, in a move that has the entire fanbase buzzing with excitement and high expectations.
Smith, 55, will join the Cowboys’ coaching staff effective immediately, focusing on mentoring the running backs and serving as a key veteran presence in a locker room hungry to reclaim the NFC East crown.
“This organization is in my blood,” Smith said during Friday’s announcement at The Star. “We’ve got unfinished business in Dallas. I’m here to guide, inspire, and do everything I can to help bring that title back to where it belongs — with the Cowboys.”
Smith’s legendary career with Dallas includes three Super Bowl championships, an MVP award, and a Hall of Fame résumé topped by his record 18,355 rushing yards. Now, nearly two decades since his last carry, he’s lacing up his cleats — figuratively — to help usher in a new era of Cowboys dominance.
Head coach Mike McCarthy welcomed the move, calling Smith “a true champion who knows what it takes.”
“Emmitt brings a championship mindset, work ethic, and leadership that’s rare,” McCarthy said. “Our young backs are going to learn from one of the greatest to ever do it — and we as a team are better because of that.”
The Cowboys are currently in a tight race within the NFC East, and Smith’s return injects not just football knowledge, but also Dallas pride and firepower at a critical point in the season. His role will include working closely with the RB corps and contributing to offensive game planning.
