The Kansas City Chiefs have certainly put themselves on the map in recent years, raising some intriguing questions about whether they’ve nudged the Dallas Cowboys off their decades-long perch as ‘America’s Team.’ Featuring in three straight Super Bowls and clinching victory in two, the Chiefs have been in the national spotlight like never before.

Add to that the star power of Patrick Mahomes—a quarterback whose talent is unmatched in the league—and you’ve got a franchise that’s becoming a household name. Travis Kelce, already a superstar, has found even more fame with his connection to pop icon Taylor Swift, making the Chiefs a staple in primetime TV, including a much-highlighted Christmas Day appearance last season.

Yet, Thanksgiving has always been sacred ground for the Cowboys. Known for their Thanksgiving Day games, Dallas has kept this tradition alive, maintaining a significant portion of that festive spotlight.

But this year, the Cowboys will share that stage with the Chiefs in an enticing matchup that seems set to deliver drama and fireworks. It’s a significant shift, igniting debates about whether Kansas City is inching closer to taking the Cowboys’ crown as America’s favorite.

However, James Jones, former NFL wide receiver turned Fox analyst, is having none of it. He points out that the Cowboys’ media presence is unshakeable, regardless of how well they’re doing in the standings.

“Winning, losing, healthy, or not, the Cowboys are always a talking point,” Jones asserts. He sees no challenger, not even the Chiefs, capable of dethroning Dallas, emphasizing, “The Dallas Cowboys will forever be America’s Team.”

Taking the long view, he adds, “Jerry Jones is brilliant, but the Cowboys will never be overtaken—especially not by the Kansas City Chiefs or anybody else.”

This rivalry between the Cowboys and the Chiefs isn’t just a modern concoction; it’s steeped in history. The Chiefs started life as the Dallas Texans before relocating to Kansas City, a move that left the NFL market in Dallas wide open for the Cowboys to claim. This matchup on Thanksgiving resurrects those early battles between the AFL and NFL, a rivalry born before the leagues merged and as they jostled for supremacy in the same city.

Last year, tensions ramped up when Missouri residents voted against increasing sales tax to fund a new stadium for the Chiefs. This got tongues wagging and fingers pointing between Kansas City and Dallas, with whispers from Dallas’ mayor about bringing the Chiefs back to their Texan roots. Such fiery exchanges only fuel the anticipation for this Thanksgiving face-off, promising not just a game, but a ratings juggernaut.
