Packers head coach Matt LaFleur admitted that the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay had its share of challenges. After 18 illustrious seasons with the Packers, Rodgers was traded to the Jets in April 2023.
His stint in New York ended unfavorably when head coach Aaron Glenn announced a shift in the team’s quarterback strategy. More than two months after the NFL’s legal tampering period began, Rodgers remains a free agent, despite strong ties to the Steelers. Pittsburgh hosted him for a visit in March but failed to finalize a contract at that time.
During an appearance on the ‘Pat McAfee Show,’ Rodgers disclosed that off-field issues were the main reason for the delay in his signing, although he has reportedly agreed to join the Steelers soon. As Rodgers contemplates his NFL future, a former coach shared insights into working with the four-time MVP.
LaFleur, who succeeded Mike McCarthy as the Packers’ head coach in 2019, led the team alongside Rodgers to three straight 13-win seasons and consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances in 2019 and 2020. While LaFleur cherishes his collaboration with Rodgers, he admitted it wasn’t always easy.
“I thought it was a fantastic partnership,” he mentioned on ‘Chris Simms Unbuttoned.’ “There were certainly challenging moments, but when people are driven and passionate, it tends to benefit the team. We supported each other in that sense.” According to LaFleur, Rodgers retains enough ability to compete.
Though his mobility has diminished, the 41-year-old’s expertise and understanding of football are unparalleled. “You can’t underestimate a player of his caliber, his experiences, and his strategic thinking,” LaFleur remarked. “Honestly, he has influenced some of my offensive football philosophies.” Looking ahead, LaFleur expressed optimism that Rodgers will soon join the Steelers rather than retire.
“I’m expecting that to happen, so it wouldn’t surprise me,” he stated. “I just can’t imagine him not playing football this season. That seems the most logical path. In our conversations over the years, he has always held someone like Mike Tomlin in high regard, so I can definitely see that happening soon.”
