In a heartwarming and deeply impactful gesture, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson has announced the full donation of his $12.9 million bonus and grant money to a large-scale homeless shelter initiative aimed at combating Chicago’s housing crisis.

The donation will directly fund the development of 150 permanent supportive housing units and provide 300 new emergency shelter beds across the city—making it one of the largest athlete-led charitable housing efforts in Major League Baseball history.

“No one deserves to sleep on the streets,” Swanson said during a press conference at City Hall. “In a city with so much wealth, so much talent, and so much pride, we can do better. And I’m going to do my part.”

The $12.9 million donation includes performance bonuses from the 2024 season as well as a substantial grant received from a philanthropic partnership between Major League Baseball and a corporate sponsor that recognizes community leadership among players.

A Game-Changing Housing Project

The project, known as the “Homeplate Housing Initiative,” will be developed in partnership with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Mercy Housing, and All Chicago Making Homelessness History.

The plan includes:

• 150 permanent supportive housing units: Equipped with on-site case management, mental health services, and job placement resources.

• 300 new shelter beds spread across two new emergency housing centers located on the South and West sides of Chicago.

• A youth-specific wing for unhoused teens, including transitional housing and mentorship programs.

The construction is scheduled to begin by the end of the year, with full operation expected by late 2026.

“Dansby’s donation didn’t just jumpstart this project—it transformed it,” said Monica Edwards, Director of Mercy Housing Midwest. “We were planning for 50 beds. Now we’re building hundreds. He didn’t just give money—he gave hope.”

Swanson’s motivation is rooted in his upbringing and values. During the press conference, he shared a personal story about volunteering with his church in Georgia, where he helped serve meals at shelters as a teenager.

His wife, Mallory Pugh Swanson, a U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team star and longtime community advocate, stood beside him in support, visibly emotional during the announcement.
