The NFL is attempting to crack down on running backs using their helmet to initiate contact against defenders. Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White was levied with a $ 45,020 fine on a play where he lowered his helmet and used its crown against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 14.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco was fined for a near-identical use of helmet play last week.

Tampa Bay’s backfield, led by White, Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker, is eighth in the NFL with 1,798 yards and 14 touchdowns. They convert a first down on 27.7% of their running plays, the sixth-best rate in the NFL.

Last season, the Bucs finished last in the NFL in rushing yards (1,509) and rushing first-down percentage (18%).

While the play in question that got White fined may appear to be standard, the NFL wants to dissuade players from lowering their crowns against opponents. More appropriate choices would be keeping his facemask up or using a stiff arm to disengage from the defender.

White’s stats this year are down, but he’s being used much more effectively. Last season, he rushed for 990 yards on 272 carries, providing just a 3.6 yards per carry average. However, his YPC is up about 17% this season as the Bucs’ made improvements along their offensive line this offseason.
