BREAKING: Ex Packer De’Vondre Campbell Quits on 49ers: Packers Fans Have Seen It Before.. – VC

A year before Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell quit on his current team, he was a Green Bay Packer. The former All-Pro was playing on a defense that struggled under coordinator Joe Barry. On December 19, 2023, Campbell, then a Packer, tweeted a bombshell, stating he wouldn’t play through injuries anymore or go out of his way for the team.

This followed a game where he was outplayed by Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield, who achieved a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field. Campbell did not play the next two games and was listed as inactive.

After the season, when released, Campbell blamed the Packers for his poor play. He tweeted in March of 2024 that someone was about to get a great player who had been misused and liked a tweet criticizing the Packers’ treatment of players. At the time Campbell quit, fans were unaware of internal discussions, but Matt LaFleur did not criticize him publicly.

LaFleur mentioned their long-term relationship and a need for better communication. Campbell refused further comment, and the Packers quietly released him at the end of the season.

Campbell’s Failed Move to San Francisco

LaFleur’s silence on the matter may have had unforeseen consequences. Campbell signed with the 49ers, where the defense has struggled. When facing the Packers, Campbell was targeted heavily. San Francisco’s losing record and playoff elimination are partly due to injuries, but Campbell’s performance has been poor.

In a loss to the Rams, the 49ers’ defense initially looked strong with Dre Greenlaw starting. However, when Greenlaw was injured, Campbell refused to play, and the Rams won. Campbell has clearly worn out his welcome in San Francisco.

This contrasts with the Packers’ handling of his departure. Forty-Niners coach Kyle Shanahan publicly criticized Campbell, unlike LaFleur, who was in a playoff race.
Coaching Styles and Organizational Differences

This raises questions about coaching styles and organizational differences. The Packers are likely relieved to have moved on from the situation. It remains to be seen how Campbell will perceive his treatment by the 49ers.
