In a highly produced video shared across social media, Geffen called the initiative “a long-overdue moment of reckoning and rebirth” for America’s most-watched sport. “This isn’t about politics,” he said. “It’s about people finally being seen for who they are—even on Sundays.”
“Touchdown for Equality” Debuts in Detroit
The NFL’s landmark Pride Parade, titled “Touchdown for Equality,” is set to kick off on June 26 in Detroit, a city that Geffen described as “the perfect symbol of resilience, reinvention, and raw American energy.”
The parade will feature marching bands, queer cheerleaders, drag performers dressed in vintage NFL gear, and performances from Janelle Monáe and Troye Sivan. The end zone at Ford Field is being temporarily repainted in full-spectrum Pride colors, and team uniforms will include optional rainbow helmet decals for the month of June.
Geffen, who is reportedly donating over $65 million to fund the event and future LGBTQ+ outreach in sports, said: “If the Motor City can lead the automotive revolution, it can help drive this cultural one too.”
Detroit Reacts: Divide Runs Deep
The reaction in Detroit—a city with deep sports pride and complex social dynamics—has been swift and polarized.
On one side, the city’s progressive community and younger fan base have embraced the move. Detroit mayor Mike Duggan expressed full support, tweeting: “Proud to see our city at the forefront of something this bold and necessary. Ford Field is making history.”
On the other hand, some season ticket holders and conservative groups have denounced the initiative, calling it “woke overreach.” One Facebook group with over 100,000 members, Keep Football Pure, has planned a “silent protest” outside the stadium during the parade kickoff.

A New Kind of Super Sunday?
With Ford Field as the launching pad, the “Touchdown for Equality” parade is scheduled to move on to Minneapolis, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and other major NFL cities. The final stop? A live-streamed, coast-to-coast Pride Bowl in Los Angeles this July, where LGBTQ+ athletes, celebrities, and former NFL stars will face off in a charity game for youth inclusion programs.
