BREAKING: Jared Goff’s big day not enough as Lions make unfortunate history in loss.TS.THANHDUNG

Jared Goff did his best to help the Detroit Lions fight back in their shootout loss against the Buffalo Bills.

Lions fans fire up on third down during the Detroit Lions game against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024. Lions lost to the Bills, 48-42.

But the Lions quarterback couldn’t close the gap, making unfortunate history in the team’s 48-42 defeat in Week 15. Goff became the first quarterback in league history to throw for more than 400 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss.

Pair that with the fact that the Lions won a game earlier this season when the quarterback threw five interceptions, and it’s a tough pill to swallow.

Detroit Lions place kicker Jake Bates (39) tries to recover his second onside kick of the day with 12 seconds left in the game during the Detroit Lions game against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024. Lions lost to the Bills, 48-42.

“Yeah, it’s not enough,” Goff said. “That’s really the best way to put it. I think we were able to rack up some yards and some touchdowns there late in the game and if we had done that earlier in the game, it probably would’ve been a closer game and wouldn’t have felt so much like garbage time there at the end.

“I know we kind of made it close there at the end, you get the onside kick, you have a chance. But I think early in the game we kind of shot ourselves in the foot offensively. In a game like that against an opponent like that, you get behind the eight ball a little bit, down a couple scores. It’s hard to climb back.”

Goff completed 38 passes on 59 attempts for 494 yards and five touchdowns. Throwing 59 times will never be the team’s preferred offensive route. But with the running game struggling to get going and the Bills building an early two-score lead, they were forced to keep throwing the ball at an aggressive rate.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) runs the ball during the Detroit Lions game against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024. Lions lost to the Bills, 48-42.

The Lions ran only 15 times, with Goff also serving as the team’s second-leading rusher with 13 yards. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery weren’t able to find a groove due to struggles and the score.

Gibbs ran eight times for 31 yards. Montgomery, who Dan Campbell said was dinged up, took just five carries for only 4 yards in a forgettable outing. Goff said he’s not concerned about the running game moving forward, chalking it up as just something they had to move away from against the Bills.

“We could never get it going,” the Lions head coach said of his ground game. “So, that’s two weeks in a row. It’s not good enough. And it’s not them. It’s us, and that’s what’s frustrating too. We’re better than that. But then we got in this type of game where, you know, Goff’s playing at such a high level, and we’ve got some receivers making plays — (Amon-Ra) St. Brown made some plays for us. Gibbs made some plays — you get in that type of shootout, and you don’t feel like you can run it.

“Then you’re going to throw it, and like I said, we wouldn’t have had this much production had our quarterback not played as good as he did. I mean, he played top-notch now, that’s asking a lot of any quarterback with 59 attempts here. That was big time, big time.”
