UPDATE: Lions May Get Golden Opportunity to Add DL Depth Before Playoffs.THANHDUNG

The Detroit Lions are 12-2 on the season and are looking to bounce back after being handed a 48-42 loss by the Buffalo Bills last week.

Not only did they lose the game but they saw multiple playmakers go down with injuries. RB David Montgomery (knee), DL Alim McNeill (knee), CB Carlton Davis (jaw), and Khalil Dorsey (leg) all left the game for different reasons.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell reacts to a play against Buffalo Bills during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024.

McNeill is done for the year with a torn ACL, and they lost DL Aidan Hutchinson for the season after he broke his tibia and fibula in Week 6 of the season. This group has an NFL-high 21 players on IR, which doesn’t bode well for a team expected to make a Super Bowl push in the playoffs.

The Lions are relying on the depth they’ve built in the offseason but they may be gifted a golden opportunity to add another presence along the trenches.

Calais Campbell Might Get Released by Miami Dolphins

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the Miami Dolphins will release DL Calais Campbell if they are eliminated from the playoffs to give him the chance to land with a contender.

The Dolphins are 6-8 on the season, but they need to win the remaining three games and get help from other teams to sneak into the playoffs. According to NFL.com, Miami has a 6% of making the playoffs.

They have the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets left on the schedule. While they may be favored in two of those three games, the odds are stacked against them.

Campbell, 38, is still playing at a high level for the Dolphins. He has 43 total tackles, ten tackles for loss, five pass deflections, and four sacks. According to PFF, Campbell has an 83.4 overall grade (7th among 214 eligible defensive linemen) and 86.6 run-defense grade (1st among 214 eligible defensive linemen).

He would fill in a major hole along the defensive front and help aid some of the losses Detroit has encountered.

This is something to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks but there is a good chance Campbell hits the open market. If he does, Detroit should make it a priority to sign him.
