Benched quarterback’s no-trade clause key to NFC reunion destiny.ANHTRUC.

Kirk Cousins, the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, made headlines this week as he found himself benched by the Atlanta Falcons. While his recent performances—one touchdown pass against nine interceptions in the last five games—might justify the move, this development opens an intriguing chapter in the NFL narrative.

Entering the arena is rookie Michael Penix Jr., set to make his debut on Sunday. But as one door closes for Cousins in Atlanta, there might be a window of opportunity in San Francisco, potentially resurrecting a much-discussed NFL storyline.

We’re not talking about celebrity gossip here; the whispers are about an enduring connection between Cousins and San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. This isn’t just a fleeting rumor; it’s a saga rich with history.

Shanahan’s interest in Cousins dates back to their time with the Washington Commanders and the 2012 NFL Draft, a time when Shanahan’s father, Mike, was the head coach. Despite the Commanders trading up for Robert Griffin III, they snagged Cousins in the fourth round, much to the delight of Shanahan Jr. who remembered being psyched about the acquisition.

Shanahan’s journey with Cousins was brief but impactful, leading him to roles with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons as offensive coordinator. By the time he took the reins as the 49ers’ head coach in 2017, Shanahan was so keen on Cousins that he offered a significant trade to the Commanders for him—an offer that was ultimately declined. General Manager John Lynch even described Shanahan as being “in mourning” over that missed opportunity.

Fast forward to the 2021 NFL Draft, Shanahan tried once more to land Cousins, offering the No. 3 overall pick in a trade, which again didn’t come to fruition. Meanwhile, speculations swirled about potential draft swaps involving Trey Lance and Cousins, but these trades remained just talk.

Even though Shanahan publicly stated he’d “moved on” from Cousins in 2023, the latest developments could breathe life into the possibility of a reunion. Cousins, on a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed, holds a no-trade clause—giving him control over his destiny. Yet, the fit seems tantalizing.

The 49ers’ current quarterback, Brock Purdy, is hitting career lows this season, and while the team is in a strong salary cap position, retaining Purdy in his final rookie deal year could prove challenging. San Francisco looks poised for immediate success with $65.8 million in available cap space for the next season.

Factor in Cousins, and the 49ers would still have $38.3 million to maneuver, per Over The Cap calculations. Cousins might just be the piece Shanahan has always wanted in his puzzle, an experienced quarterback to lead the charge.

What seemed like a pipe dream in September could soon evolve into reality, as Cousins’ chapter with the Falcons draws to a tentative close. The potential for Shanahan and Cousins to finally share the same sideline in San Francisco sparks an exciting conversation for the future. Stay tuned, because the NFL’s plotline just got a whole lot more interesting.
