On Sunday, Gibbs wasn’t the only player called upon to step up in a bigger role due to injury, as rookie Christian Mahogany was thrust into the spotlight with his first career start at left guard, replacing the injured Graham Glasgow. Mahogany’s performance was impressive, especially considering it was his debut in such a critical role. The true mark of a solid offensive lineman is often when they’re not noticed, and Mahogany fit that description perfectly—until a late false start penalty, which quarterback Jared Goff took responsibility for after the game.
Mahogany, still new to the starting lineup, spoke with enthusiasm about his first start, telling DetroitLions.com, “It was really fun. I enjoyed every aspect of it, and I can’t wait to see the film and improve.” Despite missing all of training camp due to an illness, Mahogany had managed to quickly rise up the depth chart, thanks in part to the guidance of the veterans on the offensive line who were instrumental in helping him prepare for the game. He acknowledged their support, which made his transition into the starting role smoother and more confident.
Detroit’s offensive line, bolstered by Mahogany’s strong performance, helped propel the team to a solid 146 rushing yards on the day, contributing to the Lions’ total offensive output of 475 yards. Jared Goff had an outstanding game, getting sacked just once and only being hit three times throughout the game, a testament to the line’s excellent pass protection. As the Lions continue to fight for success, Mahogany’s growth will be key, especially with the high level of play shown in his first start.
