Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson will be heading to the Houston Texans after they claimed him on waivers. Johnson was cut by the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, and now he lands with another contender.
The Texans lost wide receiver Tank Dell to a severe knee injury that will cost him the rest of the season. Johnson gives them another threat that can separate across from Nico Collins. It also gives Johnson an obvious chance to bounce back and rebuild his value before free agency.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Ravens were worried that by releasing Johnson early, he would return to the Steelers, and they could play him against them in Saturday’s contest. So, they instead waited until Friday to cut him. It is unknown if the Steelers put in a claim on Johnson, but the Texans were ahead of them in the waiver priority.
Johnson refused to go in the Ravens’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles after Rashod Bateman suffered an injury. He was seemingly upset that the Ravens would not give him a large allotment of snaps during a contract year.
He was traded from the Carolina Panthers shortly before the trade deadline. The Steelers traded Johnson to the Panthers in March.
