Chiefs predicted to sign $33 million defensive back in free agency image

The Kansas City Chiefs are in a race for the top seed in the AFC. They have not been dominant like in years past and could look to add impact free agents next offseason.

While assessing the needs of every team, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine predicted that the Chiefs would sign D.J. Reed from the New York Jets in free agency.

“Kansas City will likely need to draft a corner at some point. It has done a good job of drafting and developing talent at the position,” wrote Ballentine. “However, signing a veteran with a proven track record like D.J. Reed would give the secondary a higher floor next year.”

Injuries have played a role in the Chiefs’ inability to replace L’Jarius Sneed this season. The Chiefs are still sitting at the top of the AFC, looking to three-peat as Super Bowl champions. Regardless of how their season ends, the secondary will need to be addressed in the offseason.

Reed signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Jets in 2022. He has started 44 games for the Jets in the last three seasons. He has two interceptions in that span. His completion percentage allowed has decreased each season he has been with the Jets. He has allowed a 55.6 completion percentage this season in 12 games.

He has allowed just 344 yards and one touchdown. The Chiefs could use a player like Reed in their secondary to help mentor any young players they could add in the draft as well.
