Aaron Rodgers’s future with the New York Jets is extremely uncertain, and there’s a real chance he gets released this offseason. If he gets released he’ll have the option to retire or join another team, and that “other team” could likely be the San Francisco 49ers. We break down WHY in this article. This is a PREDICTION, not a REPORT!
Why Will the Jets Release Rodgers?
Recent reports from Jeff Howe in conversations with three NFL General Managers all came to the consensus that the smart move with a new head coach and GM is to release Rodgers. If they release him as a post-June 1st cut they’d save significant money and it’s a move similar to the Broncos and Russell Wilson.
There’s a chance the new Jets management keep Rodgers and draft a QB high in the draft, but with the turmoil of the 2024 season and Rodgers being the oldest NFL QB, it doesn’t make sense to keep him on the team. With rumors of trading Garrett Wilson and trading Davante Adams, the Jets could be facing a complete retooling after cleaning house.
Why Would the 49ers Be Interested?
The 49ers have a serious problem this offseason, and it’s figuring out how to open back up their Super Bowl window. They had a two year span of losing to the Eagles in the NFC Championship and losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but 2024 was a major drop off. They have an aging offensive line, a receiving in Deebo Samuel that needs a new contract, and a quarterback in Brock Purdy who’s a very good QB but could command $60 million a year. If the 49ers have the option to get a Quarterback like Rodgers at a discount while drafting a quarterback of the future this offseason or in 2026, this could be path that saves the Niners money and helps push them closer to a Championship.
Why Would Rodgers Want to Join San Francisco?
Rodgers will have his pick of the litter if he is released, and teams like the Dolphins, Giants, or the Vikings could come calling his name. The 49ers would be a homecoming as Aaron is from Northern California and went to California to play college football. He’s been linked to the 49ers in recent years with their infatuation for pocket passers and needing an elite game-manager and that could be Rodgers.
