UPDATE: Eagles’ Surprise Emergency Quarterback Revealed – And It’s Not Who You Think-HN

Hurts Exits Early with Concussion as Eagles Lean on Pickett in Commanders Clash

A controversial hit during Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders may result in fines later this week. While it didn’t draw a flag from Shawn Smith’s officiating crew, it had a significant impact—forcing Jalen Hurts out of the game at Northwest Stadium.

The incident occurred when Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu appeared to lower his helmet, making contact with Hurts’ head as the Eagles quarterback was already on the ground. The hit, which many viewed as unnecessary, sidelined Hurts immediately. Referees promptly sent Hurts to the sideline for a concussion evaluation, and minutes later, he was escorted to the locker room.

With 9:52 left in the first quarter, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett took over under center. By the second quarter, it was official—Hurts had been ruled out with a concussion.

Despite Hurts’ absence, the Eagles offense didn’t falter initially. Pickett confidently led the team down the field, completing three consecutive passes, including a 4-yard touchdown to A.J. Brown on a crucial third-and-three play. The Eagles extended their lead to 14-0.

However, Pickett’s early success was short-lived. On the Eagles’ following drive, he threw an interception directly to Luvu while targeting Brown. Washington capitalized on the turnover, scoring a touchdown from Philly’s 25-yard line to close the gap to 14-7.

Running back Saquon Barkley quickly reasserted the Eagles’ dominance with a stunning 68-yard touchdown run, boosting the lead to 21-7 late in the first quarter. Barkley finished the opening quarter with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns, a performance that kept the Eagles offense afloat.

Eagles Could Add Ex-Titans QB With Jalen Hurts Injury Concern

The primary concern for Philadelphia now is the long-term health of Jalen Hurts. Concussion protocols can extend beyond a week, potentially sidelining Hurts for the Eagles’ critical home game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Eagles, on the brink of securing the NFC East title, must now rely on Pickett to guide them through the remainder of the season. Whether Pickett can rise to the occasion could determine not only the division but the Eagles’ postseason trajectory.
