While rumors have swirled over and over again of McCarthy’s firing this season, more reports eventually surfaced of a potential contract extension for him.

However, McCarthy is a free agent after this season and has no obligation to stay with the Cowboys.

According to USA Today, McCarthy could jump ship for another team this offseason.

He hired Don Yee as his agent, the same man that orchestrated Jim Harbaugh’s and Sean Payton’s returns to the NFL.

McCarthy may have gone sour in Dallas this season, but he still has two 12-5 seasons with the team.

He also has the pedigree of a Super Bowl-winning head coach.

Cowboys players like Dak Prescott have publicly supported their head coach, hoping for a contract extension.

“I believe in him wholeheartedly,” Prescott told Yahoo! Sports.

“I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance.

“Another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it.

“But I wholeheartedly believe in him.”

Even Jerry Jones has spoken positively about him to the media lately, praising him for his most recent win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Proud of those guys, boy,” Jones said after the game.

“They wouldn’t give it up out there. So, I’m real proud of them, and Mike McCarthy

“He just won’t let them not think that they’re not playing for a Super Bowl out there.”

The Cowboys are 7-8 and eliminated from playoff contention, but this year isn’t the best reflection of their team.

They were almost immediately crippled by the injury to Prescott early in the season.

His torn hamstring forced him out for the rest of the season and the Cowboys have played with backups ever since.

The team has also gotten barely any production out of the running back position.

Dallas is widely expect to draft running back Ashton Jeanty in 2025.
