The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive line is a shell of the unit that began the 2024 season, and its problems are mounting following their latest injury report ahead of Monday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions.
Already down All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, his backup and Jaylon Moore, and left guard Aaron Banks, the Niners appear primed to also be without starting right tackle Colton McKivitz for their penultimate game of the season.
McKivitz, having been listed as limited for Thursday’s session because of a knee injury, missed Friday’s practice, indicating a setback for a player who has come in for significant criticism in his second year as the starter.
If McKivitz is unable to play, then the 49ers may have to start two players signed either side of last Sunday’s defeat to the Miami Dolphins, Austen Pleasants and Charlie Heck, at the two tackle positions.
Guard Spencer Burford filled in for Moore after he left the Dolphins game. However, Burford once again missed practice with a calf injury, meaning the 49ers are unlikely to be able to rely on him at tackle and that Nick Zakelj will be the frontrunner to step in at left guard with Banks unavailable due to an MCL injury.
In addition to McKivitz, Burford, and defensive end Robert Beal Jr. (ankle), fullback Kyle Juszczyk also missed practice because of an illness.
