UPDATE: The Lombardi Dream: Ben Johnson and His Plans for Detroit-HN

According to an NFL Network story, Ben Johnson, the inventive Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, will return for the 2024 season.

Johnson was considered a possibility for the head coaching positions with the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks. According to the story on Tuesday, he assured the clubs that he will remain with the Lions and hopes to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Detroit.

The 49ers defeated the Lions 34-31 in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Johnson’s asking price “spooked some teams.” Johnson is 37 and is expected to have more opportunities in the future.

Coach Dan Campbell was questioned on Monday about his intentions to replace Johnson if he leaves.

“If it comes to that, it is certainly extremely essential. I mean, he was a key component for us. He’s a key component. And I’m not worried about it just yet. Campbell added, “I need to get at least two hours of sleep before I begin.”
Johnson has been with the Lions since being appointed as the offensive quality control coach in 2019. He was elevated to tight ends coach in 2020, and Campbell retained him when he was hired in 2021. Johnson was elevated to pass game coordinator midway through the 2021 season and then to offensive coordinator before the 2022 season.

This season, the Lions went 12-5, won the NFC North, and won two playoff games.
The Lions’ offense finished the regular season ranked third in the NFL, averaging 394.8 yards per game and 58 touchdowns.Many of the major offensive players, including Jared Goff, will return next season to a scheme managed by Johnson that they have been comfortable with for two seasons.
