LATEST NEWS: After embarrassing loss to Bills, Jets set sights on recruiting Buffalo superstars, is it true?

ORCHARD PARK — Let’s play pick your adjective to describe Sunday’s 40-14 Jets loss to the Bills.

You could go with pathetic.

You could go with embarrassing.

You could go with humiliating.

You could go with all of the above and still not capture just how bad this loss was.

This looked like the varsity playing the JV at Highmark Stadium. The Bills showed they are the class of the AFC East and maybe the whole AFC while the Jets looked like they might struggle in the SEC.

The Jets lost by 26 points and it was not even that close. The Bills led the Jets 40-0 in the fourth quarter before two garbage-time Jets touchdowns.

“Going out like that is just unacceptable,” Jets cornerback D.J. Reed said. “It’s the NFL. Every game is supposed to be competitive. To be down 40-0, that s–t’s embarrassing, point blank, period.”

The only good news for the Jets is there is just one more game left in the season and it was a short plane ride home.

The Jets did nothing well in this game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw two interceptions and was sacked four times, including once for a safety. He threw for just 112 yards.

It got so bad that Rodgers was benched in the fourth quarter for Tyrod Taylor. The offense could not sniff the end zone until Taylor hit Garrett Wilson for a score in the fourth quarter.

The defense was no match for Josh Allen and the Bills offense as they scored five touchdowns. The Bills scored 28 points in the second half.

The Jets continued to be the most undisciplined team you’ve ever seen. They had 16 accepted penalties for 120 yards. Five of those penalties were personal fouls for unnecessary roughness.

The loss drops the Jets to 4-12 this season with one game left against the Dolphins next week. The Bills are now 13-3 and locked up the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.

“It’s kind of like the season. It just got away from us,” Rodgers said. “Too many games got away from us. This game got away from us. We were moving the ball well and then we just hit a wall. That’s kind of been the season.”

The frustration in the Jets locker room was palpable. Cornerback Sauce Gardner wondered if some of his teammates have packed it in. He pointed out that the Jets only lost 23-20 to the Bills in Week 6.

“You’re telling me now it’s 40-nothing,” Gardner said. “If you ask me, that means it’s the end of the season, obviously we’re not going to the playoffs, some people might be checked out. That’s just me going off of speculation.”

Gardner also mentioned how the Jets beat the Bills in 2022 and 2023 when they supposedly had an inferior roster.

“We beat them before and they had a similar roster and we quote-unquote enhanced our roster in all areas,” Gardner said. “That just tells me I don’t know, bro. We can’t be playing as a team. We probably just individuals. I know last year and the year before we had a roster that wasn’t as talented as this roster but we found ways to beat the Bills. We found ways to win. What’s stopping that now with a more talented roster?”

Reed was asked if he sees a lack of effort from anyone.

“I won’t speak on that,” he said.

While Reed acknowledged the defense needs to play better, he also pointed out the offense is not helping them. He said it is frustrating to watch an offense with talented players not be able to score.

“It comes down to complementary football, bro,” Reed said. “We’re playing a high-powered offense. Josh Allen is the MVP runner-up, whatever, a great player. We’ve got to get s–t going on offense, on special teams. You keep having our defense go out there, eventually they’re going to do something good. We’re playing a high-powered offense. Yes, defense we need to be better but we’ve got to play complementary football.”

The Jets were only down 12-0 at halftime and they opened the second half with the ball. They got to the Bills 37 and then punted, pinning the Bills at the 1. The defense got the ball back for the Jets and they had good field position at the Buffalo 45. But Rodgers threw his second interception of the game and the 10th of the season, this one to Christian Benford.

He returned it to the Bills 47 and then Rodgers was penalized for hitting him out of bounds, moving the ball to the Jets 38. Allen needed five plays to find Amari Cooper for a 30-yard touchdown and the Bills were up 19-0.

That was the first of four straight touchdown drives by the Bills and before you knew it the score had ballooned to 40-0. The Jets had three turnovers in the game — two Rodgers interceptions and a fumble by Wilson.

“It’s embarrassing,” Wilson said. “We went out there and laid an egg. I put the ball on the ground. We turned the ball over. We just didn’t play good, complementary football. We didn’t play good in one phase. It’s frustrating.”
