Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Josh Dobbs took over for the injured Brock Purdy in the San Francisco 49ers’ 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday. Dobbs even notched a seven-yard rushing touchdown. Purdy injured his elbow and could not throw a football during the game, meaning that Dobbs had to jump in and could start next week in the team’s final game of the season.
The 49ers are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but it could be Dobbs’ chance to show what he can still do in the NFL. Pittsburgh was his first team after they drafted him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He spent three seasons with the team before they traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a short stint in Jacksonville, he returned to Pittsburgh for two more seasons. Since that time, Dobbs has been on the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, and now, the 49ers
He has amassed 2920 passing yards and over 500 rushing yards over his career in spot starts. Last season, he was a key cog with the Vikings as a sparkplug but was up-and-down throughout the season.
Dobbs joins Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Mason Rudolph as former Steelers quarterbacks to score touchdowns in Week 17.
