Pro Bowl defensive back Jamal Adams is once again on the free-agent market.
On Wednesday evening, the Lions announced they had released the Pro Bowl defensive back from the practice squad, ending his brief stint in Detroit
Facing a slew of injuries on defense — particularly to their linebacker corps — the Lions signed the All-Pro defender on Dec. 1 of last year for depth, intending to use him as a box safety.
Adams made his debut less than a week after signing, contributing in a Week 14 win over the Green Bay Packers and the following week in a loss to the Buffalo Bills. Over those two games, he recorded three tackles, including two solo stops.
The 29-year-old defender did not suit up for the Lions’ last two games against the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, both of which Detroit won.
Just days earlier, the Lions had released Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander, who joined the team the same day as Adams. However, Alexander was re-signed shortly after clearing waivers.
Before joining Detroit, Adams appeared in three games for the Tennessee Titans this season, starting in one. He recorded four tackles during his time in Tennessee before requesting and receiving his release in October.
While Adams’ contributions to the Lions were minimal, the team’s linebacker unit is on the verge of becoming healthier ahead of their playoff run.
Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck) returned to the lineup Monday against the 49ers, playing 40 snaps on defense and 21 snaps on special teams while registering two tackles.
Additionally, defensive captain Alex Anzalone (forearm) returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the team will monitor Anzalone’s progress, noting Thursday’s practice could determine whether he suits up for Sunday’s pivotal matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, a game that will decide the NFC North division winner.
