Carson Wentz Set to Prove Himself as Chiefs’ Backup Quarterback

Carson Wentz, now quarterbacking for the Kansas City Chiefs, is preparing for a crucial opportunity to showcase his abilities in the NFL. As the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos, Wentz steps into the spotlight with a chance to demonstrate that he can still be a starting quarterback in the league. His performance could also significantly impact the playoff fates of teams like the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Wentz’s Perspective on the Opportunity

In a recent statement, Wentz expressed his mindset heading into the game:

“Have fun. I want to play well, have success out there and ultimately, more than anything, get a win. That’s the goal. Obviously, we know the circumstances and we know kind of where we’re at and the reason I’m playing and not Pat. But, I still go out there and expect to win. I’m going to prepare to go out there, win and have a good performance with this offense. We’re preparing for that.”

With the Chiefs aiming for their third consecutive Super Bowl, Wentz’s readiness could be pivotal, especially if Patrick Mahomes, who has struggled with ankle issues this season, faces any setbacks. Wentz’s role recalls Nick Foles’s heroics during the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl-winning season after Wentz was sidelined with an injury.

The Role of the Backup Quarterback

Replacing a player like Mahomes is no small task. Wentz acknowledges the weight of the responsibility:

“Pat at times he’s taking some big hits and there’s been a couple this year that I’m like: ‘Is this it?’ Without a doubt, you have to be ready to go and be on your toes. Stay locked in with the game plan. It’s been different, but I control what I can control. I think it will be tremendous just getting reps. Preseason is helpful, but is limited. This will be helpful if I’m needed down the stretch in the playoffs.”

Wentz emphasized the importance of preparation and learning from Mahomes:

“It’s obviously been different, but I’ve stayed locked in and I’ve stayed ready. I’ve prepared every week. Kind of had the same routine since I’ve been in the NFL. Taking some things from Pat and working with him. Going against our defense definitely does help me stay sharp.”

Playoff Implications for the Chiefs and Beyond

The stakes are high for the Chiefs. If they lose to the Broncos in Week 18, both the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals will be eliminated from playoff contention. Wentz is well aware of the ripple effects his performance could have and reflected on similar moments in NFL history, like Andy Dalton’s contribution to the Bills’ playoff berth in 2017:

“I’ve had a charity for about ten years. So, anybody can go and donate (laughs). We’ll see what happens. I do recall that (Andy Dalton helping Bills). It was funny to see. Without a doubt, we have the AO1 foundation. I take it day by day. I’m confident in myself and my abilities. What I’ve done in the past, it’s in the past. I’m confident that I can play at a high level. I’m still the same guy. You learn to not take these opportunities for granted.”

A Chance to Shine

Carson Wentz’s upcoming game against the Broncos is more than just a regular-season finale. It’s a defining moment in his career and a chance to prove his value to the Chiefs and the league. As fans and analysts watch closely, Wentz’s performance could shape not only his future but also the playoff landscape of the NFL. All eyes will be on the Chiefs’ backup quarterback as he takes the field with the pressure—and opportunity—of a lifetime.
