When the Detroit Lions began their search for a new general manager and new head coach back in 2021, owner Shiela Hamp made the decision her parents never did when she brought in football people to help with the search. She hired former All-Pro Lions linebacker Chris Spielman to be her special assistant.
He’s been a part of the front office ever since and has got a lot of credit for his help in the rebuild. Now other teams are interested in bringing him in to maybe help replicate that success. The New York Jets will host Spielman for an interview per Anthony Rothman of New York radio station The Fan.
This was to be expected to some degree. The Jets hired The 33rd Team to assist with their GM search after firing Joe Douglas mid-season. Spielman’s brother and former Vikings GM Rick Spielman is a part of that firm tasked to help the Jets.
Spielman is someone that Lions fans wanted to be their GM ahead of the Holmes hiring in January of 2021. At the time Spielman said that he was flattered by that, but that he did not feel he was qualified for that position. Apparently he may now feel that way. We’ll see what happens.
