Lions predicted to select 6’1, 4-INT cornerback as Carlton Davis replacement-HN

Detroit Lions Predicted to Draft Ole Miss CB Trey Amos as Carlton Davis Replacement

The Detroit Lions’ defense has been a revelation in 2024, ranking among the NFL’s top ten by allowing just 20.1 points per game and 98.4 rushing yards per game. Their success was a key factor in capturing the NFC North title and securing the No. 1 seed in the conference. Despite their dominance, injuries have plagued the unit, including a significant setback with starting cornerback Carlton Davis.

Davis suffered a fractured jaw in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills, and head coach Dan Campbell has indicated that the veteran is unlikely to return for the playoffs. With Davis set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, the Lions could turn to the draft for a replacement.

Trey Amos: A Potential First-Round Target

Blake Krass of DraftKings Network predicts that the Lions will select Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

“The Lions had the best offense in the NFL this season, so they are likely to target a defensive player in the draft,” Krass wrote. “Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos would be a great selection. He was a first-team All-SEC performer this season and could be an immediate difference-maker for the Lions.”

Amos’ 2024 season showcased his potential as a top-tier cornerback:

  • Interceptions: 3
  • Pass Breakups: 13
  • Completion Rate Allowed: 51.6% (on 62 targets)
  • Passer Rating Allowed: 54.5

The 6’1″, 190-pound defender combines size, physicality, and football IQ, making him an ideal fit for a zone-heavy defensive scheme like Detroit’s.

Scouting Report

Keith Sanchez of The Draft Network highlighted Amos’ potential to excel in the NFL:
“Amos possesses the ideal length, physicality, and mental temperament to be a productive cornerback in the NFL. While there are details in his coverage technique that require refinement, he appears best suited for a zone-heavy defensive scheme. With his combination of size and football IQ, Amos has the potential to develop into a reliable NFL cornerback.”

Why Amos Makes Sense for Detroit

Replacing Carlton Davis with a younger, high-upside talent like Amos would be a strategic move for the Lions. General Manager Brad Holmes has already found success in drafting defensive backs, as evidenced by 2024 first-round pick Terrion Arnold’s promising rookie season. Pairing Arnold with Amos would give Detroit two cornerstone players in the secondary, setting the stage for sustained defensive success.

Looking Ahead

If the Lions opt to let Davis walk in free agency, selecting Amos in the first round would address a critical need while adding another playmaker to their already strong defense. With a young, talented roster and a proven offensive core, Detroit could continue their ascent as a powerhouse in the NFC.
