UPDATE: Lions urged to sign $21 million Super Bowl champion to replace Carlton Davis.THANHDUNG

The Detroit Lions will look to clinch a second straight NFC Championship Game appearance on Saturday, as Dan Campbell’s squad will host the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. Detroit posted a 15-2 record during the regular season and have won 14 of their last 15 games after splitting the first two games of the year.

Though the Lions’ offense has been one of the most dynamic units in the league this season, Aaron Glenn’s defense has also been impressive despite being ravaged by injuries. Detroit has lost multiple key defensive starters to significant injuries this year, including cornerback Carlton Davis. The veteran fractured his jaw during the team’s Week 15 loss versus the Buffalo Bills and is unlikely to return for the Lions’ postseason run, per Campbell.

Davis was one of Detroit’s better defensive players before his injury, and the 28-year-old will have a competitive market in free agency this offseason. If general manager Brad Holmes is unable to re-sign the Super Bowl LV champion, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes Detroit should target Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas as a replacement for Davis.

“Douglas is a starting-caliber corner who has rarely come off the field for the Bills when healthy,” Knox wrote. “With an excellent blend of size (6’2″, 209 lbs) and ball skills, Douglas should draw interest from most cornerback-needy teams.”

“The Lions, who could lose Carlton Davis in free agency, should also have Douglas on their radar,” Knox added.

Douglas started 15 games for Buffalo during the regular and totaled 18 defensive stops with five passes defended but has struggled in coverage. The 29-year-old has allowed a 74.1% completion rate on 54 targets and a 119.2 passer rating when targeted this year.

The veteran did have a nice outing during the Bills’ wild card round victory over the Denver Broncos, allowing a 39.6 passer rating when targeted.

Douglas hasn’t been tremendous this season, but the Super Bowl LII champion would bring a nice veteran presence to Detroit’s secondary and shouldn’t be too expensive to acquire. However, Douglas isn’t a high-level starting corner and would undoubtedly be a downgrade from Davis, who was having a Pro Bow-level campaign before fracturing his jaw.

Douglas would be an adequate depth sign for the Lions, but the 2017 third-round pick shouldn’t be counted on as a starter who plays valuable snaps for a championship contender.
