The San Francisco 49ers have some soul searching to do after a disappointing 6-11 2024 season.

Perhaps the biggest question of their offseason is what to do with starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who earned a Pro Bowl nod for his stellar 2023 campaign but then regressed considerably this past season. Burdy now faces a final season with the 49ers in 2025, though the two sides seem likely to agree on a significant extension.

“All signs point toward the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy coming to an agreement on a long-term contract extension in the offseason that makes Purdy one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL,” Kyle Madson reported for Niners Wire.

So, what exactly could such an extension for Purdy look like? Projecting the outcome for The San Francisco Standard, David Lombardi projected the figure at $305 million over five years, or $61 million per season.

“It seems clear that the 49ers’ brass — outside discussions be damned — has long known that Purdy is their guy,” Lombardi added. “(Kyle) Shanahan and (John) Lynch seem solely focused on how the 25-year-old has produced and how he projects to grow in the years ahead.”

Based on a woeful 2024 season, that might seem like a hefty price to pay for Purdy. But if the 49ers believe he is the best option at quarterback for the future, it is within the going rates for such a role.

If the 49ers opt not to extend Purdy, they would have to start looking at a replacement. That might be via the draft or, more likely, through a trade or free agent signing. Nate Davis of USA Today noted that the 49ers could be a landing spot for free agent veteran Sam Darnold.

“QB Brock Purdy has been the league’s best bargain since 2022, but he also regressed last season — easily his worst as a pro,” per Davis. “Darnold was the backup here in 2023, when San Francisco reached the Super Bowl, so he’s a known commodity within the building. At a time when GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan must decide if they’re going to break the bank for Purdy, who’s newly eligible for the massive extension he’s earned, they could also consider paying Darnold what would probably be significantly less – which would mean fewer ramifications elsewhere on a talent-teeming roster and the opportunity to trade Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 draft, for a healthy return.”

There are plenty of potential outcomes for Purdy and he is just one question mark facing the 49ers as they look to bounce back to their Super Bowl form in 2025.
