“I was just too excited,” Boyd said after the 23-14 loss. “I did something I shouldn’t have done.”

Boyd later added that he talked to Ross and apologized.

“That’s not in my character,” Boyd said of the sideline incident. “I love everybody here. I love all my coaches. I would never disrespect nobody. … I love Frank. I respect everybody in that building.”

Boyd thought that his team had recovered a fumble he forced on the opening kickoff, but they didn’t and he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for removing his helmet. Broadcast cameras captured Boyd shoving Ross as the two shouted at each other after Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s 32-yard field goal. The penalty set the Chiefs up at Houston’s 13-yard line.

While Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said he did not see the exchange between Boyd and Ross, he added that Boyd’s penalty to start the game simply can’t happen.

“What I saw is we can’t come out on the first play and throw our helmet. That is silly,” Ryans said after the game. “That’s not what we teach. That’s not what we are about at all. For us to be here at this moment — to throw our helmet — we know the rules. We know we can’t do that and it just puts the team in a negative light to start the game. We give up a big return and we take our helmet off to add 15 more yards to the play. That’s just not smart football.”

Boyd is in his second season with the Texans and has contributed mostly on special teams this year.
