World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has reached the Australian Open semifinals for the third time in his career. The German triumphed over USA’s Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals at the Rod Laver Arena with a score of 7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. After the match, Zverev appeared for a brief on-court interview.

Zverev will face the winner of the highly anticipated Novak Djokovic– Carlos Alcaraz match in the semifinals of the Australian Open 2025. When asked about his take on the upcoming quarterfinal match, Zverev who is known for his humour, called it a boring matchup!

In this interview, Alexander Zverev also discussed his challenging victory against Paul. The German revealed that despite feeling he should have lost, he managed to win in a surprising turn of events. He expressed his elation on reaching the semi-finals of the tournament, commenting on his preference for night matches over day matches due to better performance under those conditions.

Despite concerns regarding his form due to an arm injury which lead him to pull out of the United Cup, Zverev reflected positively on his performance and anticipated upcoming matches. The Tokyo Olympics gold medalist is yet to win a Grand Slam title. He has been a finalist at two Grand Slams- the US Open 2020, where he lost to Dominic Thiem and the French Open 2024, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

This ‘boring’ matchup between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic is scheduled to take place tonight at the Rod Laver Arena. It will be the eighth meeting between the Serb and the Spaniard, who currently have a head-to-head record of 4-3. While Alcaraz’s present form is exceptional, he has never beaten Djokovic on a hard court.

This match is going to be a clash of generations between an all time great in his twilight years and an emerging powerhouse of talent. Their notable encounters include the Wimbledon finals at 2023 and 2024 which was won by the Spaniard and the Paris Olympics 2024 final which was won by the Serb, who just had the Olympic gold medal missing from his impressive list of achievements until that moment.

Both Alcaraz and Djokovic are aiming to script history at this Grand Slam. Alcaraz is eyeing to be the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam, the present record of which is held by Rafael Nadal. Nadal achieved this feat by winning the 2010 US Open at the age of 24.

Meanwhile, Djokovic who holds a record 10 titles at the Australian Open is seeking his 11th title and aslo an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title. He is tied with Australian great Margaret Court for 24 Grand Slam titles.
