Cornerback Carlton Davis III brings experience, Super Bowl ...

Now that the Detroit Lions have lost both of their coordinators in Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, it’ll be interesting to see if anyone will follow them from Detroit to their respective landing spots.

Of course, Johnson was hired by the Chicago Bears and Glenn took the role with the New York Jets, and there has already been rumors and speculation about them possibly taking Lions assistants with them.

Discussion: How should the Detroit Lions replace Carlton Davis?

But could the Lions see some of their players follow them, also? Well, Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron thinks it’s possible at least one of them does. He picks the Jets as the best landing spot for Lions cornerback Carlton Davis, who is set to hit free agency after completing a one-year, $14.5 million deal with Detroit.

“Before a broken jaw in Week 15 cut his season short, Davis was a standout in the Lions secondary,” he wrote. “Through 15 weeks, his 11 forced incompletions ranked ninth in the NFL, highlighting his ability to disrupt opposing passing attacks. “Reuniting with former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, now the Jets’ head coach, could be the perfect move for Davis. Glenn’s aggressive schemes, which often rely on press coverage, play to Davis’ strengths. He allowed only seven open targets in press situations despite playing a significant number of press snaps, showcasing his ability to thrive in a physical, one-on-one role.”

The Jets’ interest in adding Davis will depend upon what happens with D.J. Reed, who has served as a sensational No. 2 cornerback opposite Sauce Gardner. Like Davis, Reed is set to hit free agency, and all signs are pointing to him leaving.

“I’m ready to go to free agency, bro. I’m ready to see what’s next for me,” Reed told Tyler Dunne on the Go Long podcast.

Davis was sensational in 2024 before suffering a season-ending fractured jaw injury. He allowed a completion rate of 55.3% and a passer rating of 77.0 when targeted, so he would be a great replacement for Reed on paper.

The problem with Davis is that he’s had trouble staying healthy during his career. The 28-year-old has never played a full season and has missed at least two games in each campaign. He hasn’t played in more than 13 games since 2020.

Detroit is likely going to have interest in bringing Davis back given the uncertainty surrounding 2024 second-round pick, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who was thought to be the heir-apparent but had a rough first season with the Lions due to injury.

“I thought we got very good play from him,” Lions general manager Brad Holmes said of Davis, per Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. “I will be honest, I thought that he played better this year than he did the year before, that last year in Tampa, and he’ll tell you that too.”

Entering a brand new situation in New York, Glenn might want to bring a veteran aboard who has experience in his defense. Davis would check that box, along with giving the Jets a top-notch No. 2 cornerback and a leader in the locker room.
