UPDATE: Steelers named candidates to land embattled $180 million quarterback.THANHDUNG

Another offseason, another major question mark at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who weren’t able to take a step forward in 2024 with veteran Russell Wilson under center.

Wilson’s tenure got off to a very strong start once he was healthy enough to play in Week 7, but things went off the rails over the last handful of games and the Steelers went one-and-done in the playoffs yet again.

As a result of the status quo in Pittsburgh, there has been a belief that the Steelers may go in a different direction at quarterback in 2025. However, Wilson recently revealed he has had initial contract talks with the team.

“Yes, we have been starting to talk a little bit,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show. “We’ve had our meetings and everything else, just getting into it. So I think that it’s an exciting time to be a Pittsburgh Steeler and the opportunity of what we can do.”

While it looks like Wilson is going to be back right now, there is always a chance the Steelers pivot. If they do, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay thinks the Steelers could be a landing spot for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“Teams picking near the top of the 2025 draft such as the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns may want a proven starter to bridge the gap until a first-round rookie is ready to take over,” Kay wrote. “Fringe contenders like the Pittsburgh Steelers that lack a suitable option at the position could also be candidates for Cousins.”

The question is, will teams interested in Cousins have to trade for him? Or will the Falcons release him? We would guess the latter will happen considering every NFL team knows the Falcons have to move on from him after Cousins was benched for rookie Michael Penix last season. It would make zero sense to trade draft capital for Cousins and pick up a single dime of his $180 million deal.

Regardless of how he becomes available, we just don’t see the Steelers making a move for the 36-year-old, barring Cousins being available as a very cheap veteran backup option in free agency.

As much as Wilson struggled down the stretch, Cousins was far worse and that was despite him having a far better supporting cast on offense. The Steelers would be much better served rolling with Wilson and beefing things up around him than turning to Cousins, who looks like his best days are long behind him.
