Green Bay Packers Adjust Coaching Staff for 2025 Season
As the Green Bay Packers prepare for the 2025 NFL season, changes to the coaching staff are underway. One of the most significant shifts will be within the quarterback coaching position, following the retirement of long-time coach Tom Clements. While it’s unclear who will take on this crucial role, there are a few key candidates already in the mix.
Luke Getsy Expected to Return to Full-Time Coaching Role
One name that stands out is Luke Getsy, who is expected to rejoin the Packers’ coaching staff on a full-time basis. Getsy, a former wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator with the Packers, has had a varied coaching journey. After spending three seasons away, first with the Chicago Bears as their offensive coordinator and later with the Las Vegas Raiders in the same role, Getsy returned to Green Bay in a part-time role as a defensive consultant in 2024.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spoke highly of Getsy during the season, emphasizing his value to the team: “It’s good to have him back around. He’s known as the mayor around here, and he has a lot of long-lasting relationships with a lot of people in the building. He’s just a positive guy to be around. It’s been good.”
A Strong Coaching Background
Luke Getsy’s history with the Packers goes back to 2014, when he first joined the team under former head coach Mike McCarthy as an offensive quality control coach and wide receivers coach. After a successful season at Mississippi State as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, Getsy returned to Green Bay in 2019 under Matt LaFleur to coach quarterbacks.
His coaching acumen was quickly recognized, and he was promoted to passing game coordinator while still holding the quarterback coaching role. Under Getsy’s guidance, quarterback Aaron Rodgers won two MVP awards, a testament to his effectiveness in developing talent and leading the offense.
Challenges as Offensive Coordinator
Getsy’s success with the Packers led to opportunities with other teams, as he was hired to be the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears in 2022 and 2023, and later with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. However, his time with these teams was less successful, as he was fired midseason in both of the last two years. The lack of success in these roles was partly due to less-than-ideal quarterback situations with Justin Fields and Gardner Minshew at the helm.
The Quarterbacks Coach Search
With Tom Clements retiring, the Packers now find themselves in search of a new quarterbacks coach, and Luke Getsy is seen as one of the primary internal candidates for the job. Other potential candidates within the Packers organization include offensive assistant Sean Mannion and assistant quarterbacks coach Connor Lewis. However, according to the Rooney Rule, the Packers must interview at least one external minority candidate before making a final decision.
As the Packers continue to shape their coaching staff for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on who fills the quarterbacks coach role, as the team looks to build on its past successes and lead the next generation of talent.
