Hank Fraley’s promotion with the Lions might be pointing to who Detroit’s new offensive coordinator will be… HTX

The Detroit Lions dropped some big news on Friday when it was announced that offensive line coach Hank Fraley will not be heading to Seattle or Chicago and will stay on with the Lions.

Not only is Fraley staying on as offensive line coach, but he’s also been promoted to run game coordinator as well. That’s actually the part where things feel interesting. It feels like it could be a sign as to who the Lions may be choosing to be their new offensive coordinator.

Now, there wasn’t an offensive run game coordinator on the team last year, so Fraley isn’t replacing anyone, but with him taking on some of the run game duties, it makes you wonder if that could lead to Scottie Montgomery taking on the offensive coordinator job and the Lions hiring an assistant to take on a share of the running backs duties.

Tanner Engstrand has seemed to be a favorite for the offensive coordinator job in fan’s and media’s minds, but after Dan Campbell’s final presser on Monday, it seems that Montgomery might be the answer that makes the most sense.

The Lions want to remain schematically similar to what they’ve been and they want to keep their terminology and their philosophy the same. This is a run-first team so it makes sense that they would have the guy that’s been heading up this very successful run game be the guy who takes over the entire offense.

The other thing is that Montgomery is a lot like Aaron Glenn is the sense that he is a leader of men and the players all listen to him. We don’t really know if Engstrand has that same capability.

Lastly, we don’t quite know if Engstrand is going to be in Detroit at this time. He’s another guy who’s been attached to Ben Johson rumors and could potentially take the OC job in Chicago.

We’re going to see where things land in the coming weeks, but right now this is what it looks like to us.
