The Detroit Lions Face a Coaching Overhaul Ahead of 2025

The Detroit Lions have risen to prominence under the leadership of head coach Dan Campbell, solidifying their place as one of the NFL’s elite teams. However, their success has come at a cost. As the 2025 season approaches, the Lions must rebuild a significant portion of their coaching staff following the departures of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

Key Coaching Departures Shake Up Detroit

Ben Johnson’s move to the Chicago Bears and Aaron Glenn’s hiring by the New York Jets have left major gaps in Detroit’s coaching hierarchy. Naturally, both coordinators are bringing familiar faces with them, further impacting the Lions’ staff.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, tight ends coach Steve Heiden is set to follow Glenn to the Jets, where he will take on the role of offensive line coach. Additionally, passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand is rumored to be the frontrunner for the Jets’ offensive coordinator position, though his move has yet to be finalized.

Heiden, who began his coaching career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, spent a decade with the organization before joining the Lions. His departure, along with Engstrand’s potential exit, marks a significant shake-up for Detroit’s offensive coaching staff.

The Lions Respond with Internal and External Hires

Despite these losses, Dan Campbell and the Lions’ front office have moved quickly to fill the gaps. The team has named John Morton as its new offensive coordinator, replacing Johnson, while promoting linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator.

Sheppard’s promotion comes after speculation that he might follow Glenn to New York. Instead, he remains in Detroit, bringing stability to the Lions’ defensive unit. Campbell also considered external candidates for the position, including Larry Foote, who has served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ inside linebackers coach and pass game coordinator since 2022. Ultimately, the Lions chose to stay in-house, giving Sheppard an opportunity to lead the defense.

Meanwhile, the Jets have secured veteran coach Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator. Wilks, who most recently led the San Francisco 49ers’ defense to a Super Bowl LVIII appearance in 2023, brings 30 years of coaching experience to New York.

Maintaining Momentum Amid Change

While the departures of key coaches present challenges, the Lions remain confident in their ability to sustain their competitive edge. Campbell has already proven his ability to identify and develop coaching talent, and his track record suggests that Detroit will continue to thrive despite the transitions.

For Lions fans, the message is clear: while change is inevitable, the foundation of success remains strong. With smart hires and a well-established culture, Detroit is poised to remain a force in the NFL for years to come.
