The Los Angeles Chargers to Sign QB Trey Lance – hmai

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Potential-Based Free Agent Addition

The Los Angeles Chargers are heading into a pivotal offseason filled with crucial decisions. While the focus will inevitably be on high-profile signings and roster adjustments, there is one potential acquisition that might not be a star addition but could provide significant long-term value. This is not a report, but rather a prediction regarding a move that makes a lot of sense.

Trey Lance: A Logical Addition for the Chargers

Trey Lance will be 25 years old during the 2025 season and has already expressed interest in seeking a new opportunity as a free agent. While joining the Chargers would place him behind their franchise quarterback, Justin Herbert, the fit is intriguing. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman has prior experience working with dual-threat quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, and head coach Jim Harbaugh has worked with a similarly mobile quarterback in Colin Kaepernick.

The Chargers have more pressing concerns, particularly at the wide receiver and tight end positions. However, adding Lance provides them with a valuable insurance policy at quarterback. Currently, Herbert is the only quarterback on the roster, and Lance would immediately become the primary backup. This would be a step up from his current role in Dallas, where he sits behind both Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.

Why Trey Lance Makes Sense

  1. Development Opportunity – Lance has yet to fully develop into an NFL starter due to limited playing time. Sitting behind Herbert and learning from a staff experienced with mobile quarterbacks could benefit his growth.
  2. Improved Backup Situation – The Chargers need a reliable backup quarterback, and Lance offers much more potential than a veteran stopgap like Taylor Heinicke.
  3. System Fit – Roman and Harbaugh’s past success with dual-threat quarterbacks suggests Lance could thrive in a well-structured environment tailored for dynamic playmakers.

While not a headline-grabbing move, signing Trey Lance would be a smart, potential-based addition for the Chargers as they navigate an important offseason. The team has bigger priorities to address, but securing a promising backup quarterback could prove to be a wise decision in the long run.
