Luka Doncic’s trade has shaken the sporting world to its core, and it is worth seeing how it affected the die-hard Dallas Mavericks fans.
It was Micah Parsons‘ turn to react when a fan tells him “you’re next” after the Luka Doncic trade, but could the Dallas Cowboys really do it?
The Slovenian’s departure from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers is something that fans simply cannot explain. General manager Nico Harrison tried to do so on Sunday. He probably only made it worse by revealing the details of the deal, including that coach Jason Kidd was unaware of the move and that no other team was contacted about the trade.
Parsons responded humorously to the post
Dallas fans have already been through a lot. Some of them, perhaps the most desperate and hopeless, believe that a similar trade could be on the horizon for the Cowboys, and one even told Micah Parsons on X “now you have (your) bags packed”. Parsons responded humorously to the post with several crying emojis.
But in all likelihood, a group of Cowboys fans probably saw the post and wondered for a split second: “Ugh… could it happen?”.
Disclaimer: it’s not safe to say we can objectively compare Doncic’s situation to Parsons’, but since he’s the “most likely” trade candidate among the Cowboys’ stars due to the fact that he hasn’t signed a huge contract extension (yet), he’s the guy that comes to mind.
Star player trades that caused controversy
Despite Parsons’ comments about not needing to be the highest-paid defender in NFL history, he is almost certain to become that this offseason. Those negotiations can take many directions and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world if the Cowboys and Parsons’ team don’t agree and end up leading to a shocking trade
We’ve seen big stars traded before, including Khalil Mack, Tyreek Hill, Antonio Brown (we had no idea how that would turn out), Odell Beckham Jr. and others.
They may not be the same, but those are star player trades that caused controversy at the time. The point is that crazier things have happened before.
And yet, as critical as Cowboys fans may be of the front office’s mediocre approach to free agency and its generally conservative view of team building, the Joneses generally pay their “homegrown” talent.It may take them forever to do it, which hurts them from a salary cap perspective, but they basically never let a star they drafted leave. Not someone of Parsons’ caliber.
When all is said and done, I think Parsons will get his extension in Dallas. I don’t think the Cowboys are going to part with a talent like his, but if for some reason that happens, I wouldn’t have such an extreme reaction as we’ve seen with the Doncic trade.
