Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes hopes to improve his baseball skills ahead of Super Bowl LIX: ‘I wish I could play a little better’.

The countdown for Super Bowl LIX has begun. Ahead of the big game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has expressed his desire to have been a little bit better at baseball.

Mahomes’ father, Patrick Mahomes Sr. was a major league player during his youth. The senior Mahomes played in the MLB from 1992 to 2003 and also spend two years at the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) of Japan.

As a result of this, Mahomes spent a lot of time in his childhood in MLB locker rooms. During an interview with MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter in 2023, Mahomes admitted that he wanted to be a baseball star instead of playing football.

On Monday night, 3-time Super Bowl MVP has once again spoken about his love for the sport of baseball. While speaking to the media, the 29-year-old claimed that he wished he was a bit better at this game than he is at football.

Mahomes further insisted that he could have been a minor league player playing in the Triple-A or Double-A. He though acknowledged that it is hard to break into the major leagues and pointed out his father’s career.

There is no doubt that Patrick Mahomes is an avid baseball fan. Given his past, the Chiefs star has been in touch with several MLB players. In a video shared by his team on Sunday, Mahomes named former New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez as his favorite baseball player.

There is no surprise on this one as well. At the time Mahomes was growing up, A-Rod was one of the biggest names in MLB. The 14-time MLB All-Star had amazed a huge fan following at that point. Apart from that, Mahomes would also tee up baseballs for him and his Yankee teammate.

In April last year, Mahomes was named in the Time Magazine as one of the ‘100 most influential people‘. Following this, Alex Rodriguez would admit that he gave him one of the “worst advice ever” and was glad that Mahomes did not follow it.

Rodriguez had urged him to give up on football and join baseball. He claimed that the money was in baseball. Mahomes though ditched this advice and instead chose to play football at the professional level after he played both of these sports in school and college.

On Monday night, the 3-time MLB MVP recalled this advice again. He would share a photo of him and a young Mahomes and wished him well for the Super Bowl match against the Eagles this upcoming Sunday.

What would have happened if Mahomes followed in the footsteps of his father and tried to play professional baseball? Would he have achieved the same success as he has in football? That is hard to tell. Given his athleticism though, he could have made a strong push in MLB.
