Brock Purdy is the San Francisco 49ers’ franchise quarterback. Once the offseason officially gets underway, general manager John Lynch is expected to undergo long-term contract extension negotiations with Purdy, who’s entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Yet, quarterbacks get injured all the time, and head coach Kyle Shanahan understands the importance of having a good backup plan.

Both Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen are set to become unrestricted free agents, so the 49ers will be forced to add another arm this offseason because Purdy is the only quarterback under contract for next season.

Pointing to one potential solution, as Joe Simile of Athlon Sports noted, the 49ers have high odds to land Aaron Rodgers this offseason per one sports book and there are some good reasons to believe the team could be a favorite to pull it off.

“Currently, the 49ers have the third-best odds to land Rodgers for next season (+400), trailing the Las Vegas Raiders (+200) and Pittsburgh Steelers (+300),” Simile wrote. “The Chico, California, native had previously expressed interest in playing for his hometown 49ers. During the 2021 offseason, 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan reached out to inquire about Rodgers’ availability. The 49ers could benefit from a veteran like Rodgers, with weapons such as Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, there could be enough firepower there to make a playoff run. Meanwhile, the 49ers could look to draft a quarterback to develop under Rodgers while still being competitive during their tight contention window.”

Of course, Rodgers is under contract with the New York Jets next season with a $23.5 million cap hit. So if the 49ers do have interest in adding the former Super Bowl winner, it would have to either happen via trade or if the Jets release the 41-year-old.
